The Golden Globes: The Celebrities Who Slayed

The question wasn’t if stars were going to wear black to the Golden Globes, but how. The universally flattering colour was used as a powerful symbol to protest sexual harassment in Hollywood, and almost every major star showed up in black to stand in solidarity. A handful of attendees didn’t wear black at all, for cultural reasons or otherwise, but the carpet was largely a sea of black with pops of colour.

Some women got creative with their looks, whether it was incorporating a design on their black gown or accessorising with bold jewellery. With the help of their stylists, nominees like Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan went outside of the box when dressing in black, and we couldn’t help but notice. Scroll on to see which stars added that fashion-girl touch to their looks.

Kelly Clarkson

The singer added a unique element to her black Christian Siriano gown with a dash of gold on the bodice and sleeve. The gold trim elevated the dress from your standard red carpet, black dress and gave it that superstar touch.

Alexis Bledel

Alexis opted for an Oscar de la Renta jumpsuit with a leaf motif instead of a traditional black gown. This was a different look but Alexis pulled it off with ease.

Samira Wiley

The Orange Is the New Black actress wore a Romona Keveza dress, but what really caught our eyes was her patterned neckline. The oversized accessory looked fantastic and helped her black dress look a little less ordinary.

Meher Tatna

Meher Tatna, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, had a good reason for not wearing black at all. It’s against her culture to wear black unless she is a widow in mourning, so she took it to the next level with a bright red dress and coat.

Saoirse Ronan

Saoirse proved silver and black do mix in Atelier Versace. The silver trim of her dress looked fantastic alongside her platinum blonde, cropped hair style. The padded shoulders also gave the look a sense of female power which we felt was apt after the recent discovery of sexual harassment in Hollywood.

Dakota Johnson

The best part of Dakota’s black Gucci dress was the splash of crystal designs on the back.

Margot Robbie

Similar to Dakota Johnson, Margot chose a Gucci dress with silver designs. The front of her look featured a giant draping bow detail, and she accessorised with Tiffany & Co. jewels and a Roger Vivier clutch.
