The Top Street Style Trends of Spring 2018 Fashion Month

The first question most editors get before their month long, four-city Fashion Week tour is, “What are you going to wear?” Sure, it’s fun to see what everyone packed in their suitcases, but the street style looks, pictured on the people in and around the fashion shows are also a good indicator of what our own friends will be wearing later this season. From democratic blazers to dresses in a shocking color we never thought we’d wear. Scroll through the seven most important street style trends of the moment, below.

Blazing the Trail

The single piece of clothing we saw the most of this season? A menswear-inspired blazer. Worn as a suit with matching trousers or thrown on with jeans, this is a look that works for literally everyone. The gray plaid double-breasted blazer from Raf Simons’s first Calvin Klein collection was the month’s unequivocal trophy piece, but we also saw lots of statement-y velvet blazers and simple black jackets.

Orange You Glad?

Along with lavender, orange is set to be the colour of the season. There’s no concrete explanation for why this particular hue feels fresh right now, but it has something to do with the trend for the “ugly,” slightly off, super-bright colors seen on recent runways. We spotted lots of women in orange coats and jackets, but true fashion fans will wear it head to toe.

Hat Trick

Are newsboy caps and berets the new It bags? If the number of models and editors we saw wearing them is any indication, the answer is a resounding yes. More than a few girls turned up in Dior’s leather berets from Fall ’17, and the model of the season, Kaia Gerber, opted for a newsboy cap in bordeaux. It’s worth pointing out that a Gallic hat is arguably the best selfie accessory, too; unlike a handbag or shoe, it makes it into every shot.

Sweater Dressing

Chunky sweaters aren’t exactly new, but this season found women reimagining how they wear them, from the models going “pantsless” in XL knits to a few lucky girls test-driving the “I Love New York” pullovers from Raf Simons’s Fall ’17 menswear collection

Up-to-There Hemlines

Ready for the temperature to rise ? It’s almost the the time to bust out your tiniest cut-offs and skirts. The leggy look made a serious comeback this season, from micro-miniskirts to shorts that were so short, they practically disappeared under jackets. This look is very ‘cheeky’ indeed. You see what i did there!

Clashing Prints

Print lovers, take note: The cool way to wear pattern now is layered and mashed together. Some pieces do the work for you, like the patchwork Diane von Furstenberg dress we saw on a handful of girls, otherwise there’s an anything-goes mentality to mixing your snakeskin, florals, camouflage, and leopard.

Making a Spectacle

The weirder your sunglasses… the more likely you are to get photographed? We haven’t tested this theory, but in a slideshow of hundreds of street style photos, the girls in crystallized Gucci frames, kitschy cat-eyes, and heart-shaped specs certainly stood out.
